The AI community needs to position itself in the face of the recent weakening of the basic components that sustain life in democratic societies. Democracy calls for well-informed citizens, in an atmosphere of free criticism, organization and expression. Many instruments that sustain and amplify social tensions are directly linked to technologies that, misguided, disguise and distort facts, destroy reputations and stimulate polarization in societies. Can we work on AI without losing rigor as well as the moral and ethical compass? WE BELIEVE SO.
